New to Commons: The Explore Tab is a Single Source for Climate Action
The Commons app is full of practical tips and advice for sustainable living. But having all this information is only useful if you’re able to find what you’re looking for.
So, we did some reorganizing to make it easier for you to take climate action. Say hello to the new Explore tab.
The climate crisis is moving quickly. The Explore tab combines dozens of articles, 300+ sustainable brands, various climate actions, and offsets all in one place. Now, it’s easier than ever to find the right kind of actionable guidance you need when you need it.
Search everything in one place
Whether you’re looking for sustainable shoes, the carbon impact of seasonal produce, or how to switch to a sustainable bank, the new Explore tab makes it easy to find what you need.
- Articles: Search and browse 50 articles from the Explore tab to quickly find digestible information on topics that are important to you. Previously, you could only find articles within Actions.
- Actions: Access step-by-step how-tos with personalized recommendations and calculations of your projected emissions reduction.
- Brands: Discover 300+ brands that are measurably reducing global emissions.
- Offsets: Learn more about offsets and find options to offset your footprint or gift offsets.
To start, tap the search bar to find what’s trending under Popular Searches. Or search anything from “furniture” to “food” to laundry to get information and guides.
Search, filter, and sort all brands and content
We’ve added filters and sorts to Actions, Articles, and Brand category pages so you can find the information you need more easily.
Filter actions and articles by the categories you’ll see on your carbon footprint breakdown.
You can sort articles by date to see the latest or sort brands by newness or popularity. You sort actions by date, impact, or progress to see which ones you’ve started.
Save brands you’re interested in
With nearly 400 brands to browse, we’ve made it easier to save the ones you’re interested in. When you find a brand you want to revisit later, just tap on the bookmark icon.
You’ll find all your saved brands on your profile. From the home screen, just tap the profile icon in the top right. You’ll find a “Saved Brands” section midway down your profile.
Updates to the tab formerly known as “Footprint”
In addition to the new Explore tab, we renamed the Footprint tab “Progress.” We made this change to more accurately frame carbon footprints as a tool for tracking our sustainability progress.
In this tab, users will still find the emissions of all their transactions, in addition to all the same great footprint tracking tools and insights:
- A chart of your annual emissions, month by month
- A chart comparing this month’s footprint to last month’s
- A breakdown of this month’s emissions by category
- Your largest emission purchases and most frequent purchases
- Your sustainable purchases
We also introduced features to search, filter, and update your transactions more easily to get your most accurate carbon footprint. Read more here.
Our team is working on even more ways to track your progress in this tab. Keep an eye out for more updates here!
What’s next for the Community tab?
In this update, we’ve also removed the “Community” tab. This tab was a place to see a feed of folks joining the app and taking action.
Commons is founded on Community and the idea that individual action only works en masse. We didn’t remove the Community tab to deprioritize or decenter the collective power and voices of our community. Quite the opposite. Collective action is a crucial part of our mission.
We’re exploring ways to more seamlessly integrate the progress and experiences of our community throughout the app. We’re all in this together and want to remind you of that every time you open Commons.
