Be Part of Something Bigger with Collective Challenges
When we work together, our aggregate influence can make the biggest possible impact. Collectively, our sustainable lifestyles can motivate actual industry shifts.
That’s why we’re excited to announce a new community feature in the Commons app: Collective Challenges!
Every month, Commons we’ll launch a new Collective Challenge to encourage and quantify our sustainable choices together.
- May 2024: We’re shopping secondhand first, using $10,000 of our collective spending to foster the circular economy.
- June 2024: We’re using $5,000 of our collective spending to support public transportation.
How Collective Challenges Work
Users can join each monthly challenge from the Home tab. When users join a challenge, all their qualifying purchases for that month’s challenge will count toward our collective goal.
For each applicable purchase, users are awarded 5 seeds. All participating users with qualifying purchases will earn a 50-seed bonus at the end of the month if we reach our collective goal!
Users can collect seeds throughout Commons as they make climate-friendly purchases, take on actions, and offset their emissions. Once they accrue seeds, they can redeem them for cash or offsets.
May Challenge: Secondhand Shopping
Whether it’s shoes, clothes, phones, home decor, or kitchen appliances, we’re shopping secondhand first in May. Secondhand shopping is a crucial way to reduce our reliance on new goods, and the emissions they rack up. That’s why we want to boost the circular, secondhand market with our first Collective Challenge.
In May, participating users will earn rewards at hundreds of secondhand brands . From peer-to-peer marketplaces like Mercari and Poshmark to brick-and-mortar thrift stores like Goodwill and Savers, each of these purchases will contribute to our collective goal of $10,000.
The Commons community is already defaulting to secondhand shopping. In 2023,92% more users were shopping secondhand than in 2022. Our users are spending most of their secondhand dollars at Poshmark, Mercari, and Depop. Read more about our collective action in our 2023 Community Impact report.
