How to Make Athletic Clothes Last Longer
One of the most sustainable actions we can take is extending the life of items we own. Using products longer keeps them out of landfills and reduces the need for new products.
When it comes to athletic wear, it’s imperative we use it as long as possible because it typically contains synthetic fibers — essentially plastics derived from fossil fuels, which contribute to the climate crisis and take centuries to degrade.
By extending the life of our athletic wear, we reduce the demand for synthetic fibers and in turn, fossil fuels.

Before Washing Your Athletic Clothes
Turn It Inside Out
When you workout or play sports, most of the sweat and bacteria collect on the inside of your athletic clothes. So to keep them in great condition, turn them inside out before washing them. This also helps to protect the design and colors. Using a mesh laundry bag will protect your workout clothes from damage caused by zippers and buttons while preventing them from getting tangled with other items in the wash.
Spot Treat Immediately
If you notice stains on your activewear from sweat, deodorant, or body oils, tackle them right away since they get harder to remove over time. Use a mixture of baking soda and water or a stain remover to pre-treat the stains. Let it then sit for 10-15 minutes before washing.
When Washing Your Athletic Clothes
Wash In Cold Water and Gentle Cycle
When washing athletic clothes, always use cold water and the gentle cycle to protect your performance fabrics. Cold water is particularly important since hot temperatures can cause shrinkage and break down synthetic fibers.
Avoid Fabric Softeners
Skip the fabric softener when washing your activewear. Fabric softeners create a coating that blocks the moisture-wicking and odor-trapping properties in performance fabrics. If you need to soften your clothes, use white vinegar as a natural alternative.
After Washing Your Athletic Clothes
Air-Dry if Possible
Using a dryer can weaken the elastic in your athletic clothes, causing them to stretch out. It can also make any odors more intense. It may also shrink the clothes, shortening their lifespan. Air-drying is the best way to make your activewear last longer. If you must use a dryer, select the lowest heat setting to protect your workout gear.
Store Properly
Instead of tossing your activewear in a pile or stuffing it into drawers, fold it neatly. Folding is even better than hanging as it prevents stretching and maintains the garment's shape. But if you must hang items, use padded hangers to protect the fabric.
While it's tempting to wear your favorite workout clothes repeatedly, this can actually damage them. Instead, have at least 2-3 sets that you can rotate. This will help the fabric maintain its shape and elasticity for longer.
