Fall Patio Gardening: Small Spaces, Big Harvest

Fall is just around the corner, but there's still plenty of growing time left this year. Now is the time to get in your late summer planting for a fall harvest. If you have a small garden or are limited to patio gardening, don't worry! You can still grow a bountiful fall harvest with the right crops. Here are some easy-to-grow fall crops that are perfect for small spaces:

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are easy to grow and can be planted in late summer for a fall harvest. Try planting spinach, arugula, bok choy, kale, collard greens, or lettuce in a container or small garden bed. They don't take up much space and can be harvested multiple times.

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables are perfect for small spaces because they grow underground. Carrots, radishes, turnips and beets are all great options for a fall harvest. Just make sure the soil is loose and well-drained so the roots can grow freely.

Herbs

Herbs are a great addition to any fall garden and can be grown in small pots or containers. Try planting basil, parsley, or cilantro for a fresh addition to your fall recipes.

Peas and beans

Peas and beans can be planted in late summer and will continue to grow well into the fall. They don't take up much space and can be grown in a container or small garden bed. Plus, they're a great source of protein and fiber.

Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes

If you're in a region with mild winters and a long growing season, you can try growing early-maturing potato varieties in simple sacks or basic pots. Varieties like Yukon Gold, Red Norland, Irish Cobbler, and All Blue are worth a try. You can also plant sweet potatoes.
