6 Plastic-Free Workout Brands That Skip Synthetics

What makes good workout clothes? They should be durable, stretchable, and able to withstand multiple washes. And ya, good sweat-wicking properties. Synthetic fibers like polyester, acrylic, and nylon have all these features, which is why you would find them in most workout clothes.

But these synthetic clothes come with hidden environmental and health costs.

Environmental and Health Impact of Synthetic Clothes

Synthetic fibers are essentially plastics derived from fossil fuels that release greenhouse gases, which are responsible for the climate crisis. Also, every time we wash these clothes, they release microplastics into the environment, accounting for 35% of all microplastics in the ocean.

Some synthetic workout clothes also contain PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), which make them water and stain-resistant. PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," don't biodegrade easily and persist in the environment indefinitely.

These PFAS can accumulate in the human body, posing risks such as hormonal disruption, immune system effects, and cancer risks.

Synthetic fibers often contain other harmful additives like phthalates and bisphenols. While working out, our sweat can draw out these chemicals, allowing them to be absorbed through our skin.

Early studies have linked these chemicals to adverse health effects such as thyroid disease, hormonal disruption, and neurological issues.

Plastic-Free Workout Clothes

If you already have synthetic workout clothes in your closet, don't toss them out immediately. Instead, gradually reduce their usage while continuing to wear them until they're worn out.

When it's time to replace, check out these brands that offer plastic-free workout clothes, such as PFA-free leggings. Some of these brands use recycled synthetic materials. Although these are preferable to virgin synthetic materials, they still contribute to microplastic pollution and may pose health risks.
